Real Name: Leanne Mirasol Fontanilla Evangelista
Ring Name: Evangelista
Height: 5'1"
Weight: 133lbs
Hometown: St Helens, England
Alignment: +3; she's less inclined to do heelish things than Laurel, but doesn't provoke as strong reactions (either positive or negative).
Entrance Music: "Candy Castle" by Glass Candy
Entrance Description:
Multicoloured spotlights swirl around the entranceway as the martial-sounding intro to Glass Candy's "Candy Castle" comes across the PA. As the beat kicks in Evangelista walks through the curtain and places her hands on her hips, surveying the auditorium with a smile. Laurel Anne Hardy is by her side, dancing around with a feather boa.
David Zinkus: From St Helens, England, weighing one hundred and thirty-three pounds, being accompanied by Laurel Anne Hardy and representing The Asylum...
The two young women share a good luck hug, then start down the aisle and head in opposite directions when they reach the bottom - Evangelista focused on the task ahead and absently tagging a few outstretched hands, Hardy dancing back and forth and interacting with the fans much more with hugs, high fives and handshakes. After completing a circuit of the ringside area they regroup and Evangelista slides under the bottom rope while Laurel leaps over her onto the apron, and somersaults over the top rope. They run up opposite turnbuckles and pose, then drop and repeat their actions in the other two corners. Hardy throws her boa into the crowd, prompting a scrum to catch it.
David Zinkus: She is "The Prodigal Daughter"... EVANGELISTA!
They both moonsault down to standing positions in the centre of the ring. Evangelista crosses herself and warms up while Laurel steps out to ringside.
Physical Appearance: Broad, athletic-tough build. Heavily tattooed including full sleeves, mostly tribalish vines with roses and thorns, plus a few other odd designs here and there; of note, she has The Asylum's 'A' symbol on her ankle. Warm brown eyes. Long dark brown hair which hangs in waves to her collarbone then falls in curls past that. She is 3/4 Philippine, 1/4 Irish/British, with pale dusky skin.
Clothing: Usually plain and understated, and quite formless and concealing a lot of the time. She's always cold, so she often wears thick clothes or multiple layers, and wears jackets or hoodies even in summer. She never wears scarves or any other kind of neckwear, though.
(Picture base: Mutya Buena)
Ring Attire: Knee-length boots with kickpads, long tights, gypsy-neck crop top with short sleeves, and armbands which stretch from her wrist to shortly before the elbow. These all have a smoky, swirling design on them. Four colour combos: lilac with dark silver-grey swirls; lavender with silver swirls; silver with dark blue swirls; and dark blue with silver swirls.
Gimmick: A individual who wrestles, in a professional capacity. Evangelista is a very no-nonsense, no-gimmick-needed kind of wrestler; she's prodigally talented but cripplingly insecure.
Personality: Evangelista is talented and ambitious, with her sights set firmly on being a world champion, but she suffers from chronic depression and severe issues of self worth. She constantly feels like she's living in the shadows of her associates, especially Laurel Anne Hardy, and that no matter what she does it's never enough for the world to take her seriously as an athlete. In the ring she's all business and comes off like a quietly confident ice queen - but it's increasingly clear that this is a front, as Evangelista has admitted to suffering from stage fright and clinical depression, and has hinted at self-harm and suicidal impulses. She doesn't always have the best judgement, and tends to get meekly pulled along by stronger personalities even when she knows it's a bad idea. She is of average intelligence, although she considers herself stupid.
Strengths:
1) Evangelista is a technical prodigy, with a startling intuition for the flow of combat. She's almost inhumanly gifted at predicting her opponent's moves and knowing what to do next.
2) She is a great all-round physical specimen, with great stamina, very good reflexes and even decent strength considering her size.
3) Determination. Despite her myriad insecurities, Evangelista's desire to prove herself means she can get into the zone in combat easily, and gives her the willpower to dig deep when things seem hopeless.
Weaknesses:
1) Evangelista's broad frame makes her stronger than her 5'1" stature might suggest, but she is certainly no bruiser. Much of her offence is useless to her against heavyweights.
2) An opponent who knows how to push her buttons can take advantage of her insecurity and get inside her head. She's certainly not above falling for tricks and mind games.
3) She has a thing about her neck and hates people touching it. Depending on her mental state, she might freak out if an opponent gets her in a cravate or chokehold, or otherwise goes (literally) for the throat.
Biography: Leanne Evangelista was just another young woman with no direction in life. After dropping out of college before completing her A-levels, she got a job in Tesco after a period of unemployment. She settled into a routine of depression and boredom, with all her spare money going on partying and getting tattoos.
Through her tattooist, she met pro wrestler, rock star and ex-MMA fighter Mark Chapman, and through him, a number of current and former stars of the wrestling ring including Baby Dogg, Amy Ngoudje, Damien Synn and Morgan Greene. Their stories of life on the road inspired her to do something more with her life, and she decided to follow them into wrestling. She persuaded work to transfer her to another branch, and spent every free evening in the gym or the training ring.
Thanks to additional training from her new friends, and a previously unrealised gift for grappling, Leanne quickly established herself as the brightest potential star in her training class. She became close to another standout, Laurel Yunokawa, as even though they didn't have much in common superficially, they understood each other well on a deeper level. The homeless Laurel even moved into Leanne's parents' house for a time, sleeping on the sofa.
With the backing of Mark and Amy, Laurel and Leanne landed tryouts with Global Extreme Wrestling, and were referred to the Battlegrounds Academy in Ontario, run by multi-time World Champion Shane Tallin and his wife Nikki. The girls eventually made their pro debut in GEW as a tag team, aligned with the mysterious new Asylum faction, courtesy of their friend and fellow trainee Serena Raine. The Asylum waged war on GEW, declaring that the company had become soft and decadent, and that The Asylum would save it from itself by destroying it and rebuilding it in the old image. This, naturally, meant turning against the friends who'd helped them into GEW in the first place - some of whom Laurel and Leanne have since mended bridges with, some of whom they have not. Shortly thereafter Leanne also signed with Championship Wrestling Federation, who were trying to rebuild their women's division.
When the CWF women's division collapsed, Leanne persuaded management to let her into the men's ranks, with the help of a cocky young rising star named Jay Pride. Taking Leanne on as his protege, Jay guided Leanne to multiple championship reigns, and the pair also signed with FRONTIER in the UK where they were named 2011's Tag Team of the Year and scored an upset win over multi-time MWA World Champions Sean McBride and John Patrick. Evangelista also won that year's GFC Award for most promising newcomer, and made the finals of the first ever GFC Invitational tournament to crown the inaugural GFC World Champion, losing to Kevin Hardaway in overtime after fighting to a sixty minute time limit draw.
Thanks in part to The Asylum's efforts, GEW closed down in summer 2011. Leanne and Jay continued to fight in FRONTIER and CWF, finding themselves turning into unlikely fan favourites despite their use of questionable tactics. However, brutal sneak attacks from Christian Cross & Bobby Mercer in CWF and Alex Jones & Dexter Davis in FRONTIER within the space of a week forced them to take some time off due to injury. They returned in January 2013, re-signing with FRONTIER, this time with Laurel at their side. Now fighting as The UK Dragons, Laurel and Leanne quickly became FRONTIER's most popular tag team. They answered an open challenge by The CarnEvil Connection, which brought them to WARPED and thence into conflict with The Carnies' stable AbominationZ. The Dragons joined the WARPED seikigun against AbominationZ, and Laurel found herself in a leadership position. To help combat AbominationZ' resources, she reformed The Asylum, now contrite over GEW's demise and vowing to protect wrestling companies from villainous stables trying to make the same mistake they themselves had made.
The Asylum's return was capped off by Laurel branding AbombinationZ member Alexander StarrZoe live on air; in retribution, Starr kidnapped Leanne's sister Lily. During this time Leanne fell into a deep barely-functional depression, and withdrew from all wrestling activity other than matches. A brutal, bloody war ensued between the Dragons and Starr; meanwhile Laurel was also getting into a bitter personal rivalry with Malcolm Drake, leader of Frontier Grappling arts faction The Murder, over which of them was capable of the most extreme acts of brutality. Leanne, pushed beyond breaking point by Laurel's habit of getting them involved with wrestling's biggest monsters, snapped and turned on her longtime best friend. Each feeling betrayed by the other, the two women aired each other's psychological demons in vicious promos before meeting in a hardcore match at FRONTIER's 50th anniversary show. It was essentially a 45-minute bloodbath as the two friends exorcised the frustrations that had been building for many months, and it ended in a draw when they finally reconciled and left the arena together in floods of tears.
Despite their relationship being rocked the pair decided to continue teaming together for the GFC Invitational tag team tournament, and overcame the legendary team Total War in the first round - but fell hard to The Shoot Kings in the second round in a match which saw the Dragons get barely any offence in. Leanne called an end to the team to focus on her solo career again, and won FRONTIER's 2014 Open House event, becoming number one contender to the Commonwealth Championship in the process; shortly thereafter, she beat the undefeated Summer Collins to win her first singles title in over two and a half years. However, Laurel isn't giving up their partnership without a fight...
Wrestling Style: British/Canadian hybrid technician. Her default strategy is to chain together joint locks and transitional/leverage holds into stretches or takedowns to weaken the opponent's body, targeting weakened body parts if possible. She also has a pretty good striking game, and is a functionally capable high-flier. Her height/weight ratio makes her pretty strong, so she favours grapples against women as well as lighter men. Against heavyweights, she switches to a hit-n-run flying strategy, but she's not as good at that as she is at grappling. She is focused and stubborn, and has decent ring awareness, but is not above falling for shenanigans and distractions.
Finishers
1. "Headbreaker" - Similar to an uranage backbreaker, but instead of hitting the opponent's spine against her inside knee, she hits the back of their head against her outside knee. She may jump for added momentum. Her favoured finisher against small opponents. It's easily countered, but devastating if it connects.
2. "Lime Street Loop" - Double grapevine dragon sleeper. Her favoured finisher against large opponents, as the height difference compresses their spine more.
Signature Moves
1. "Battlegrounds Uppercut" - European uppercut, pushing the opponent's head down with her other hand.
2. "Pinay Legsweep" – Tornado into side Russian legsweep, without touching the ground.
3. "Stevie G" - Running shoot kick to the back of the head of a sitting opponent.
