Hear me out. I'm really a non-reader. I absolutely for some reason hate books once I finished college. The thing is, my cousin lend me "The DaVinci Code" and I read it completely and loved it...(yeah, Dan Brown sucks, etc. , I suck as a reader, kill yourself, etc.) ...
The thing is I want to read more books now, like mystery/horror things and would like your input on what books are good to read. I love a good scare at 2:00 AM. I went on a shopping spree on Amazon and bought The Stand, The Shining, Ghost Story and the complete set of The Vampire Chronicles (Interview with The Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, Queen of the Damned and something about the body thief or whatever).
So...Input away or I kill ya.

If you want a little bit of horror with a lot of fun, I recommend "World War Z", "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" (much better than the movie), "Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies", and "John Dies at the End". Since you like Stephen King, I'll also recommend "Heart Shaped Box" by his son Joe. It's an outstanding book.

Under the Dome and 11/22/63 both by Stephen King
Under the Dome isn't really a mystery and the horror is more of the whole "the evil inside of man" thing but it's an exciting read despite the length. But if you picked up The Stand length is no issue.

more dark fantasy than horror, but The Child Thief by Brom. saying "gritty, more-adult retelling of Peter Pan" may still sound like kiddie shit, but I haven't found a person yet who read it and didn't like it. basically, if you read the original Barrie, you have this charismatic immortal boy seducing children away from their homes and signing them up to fight his enemies for him. and the peril's great enough that the crop is in constant need of replenishing. Peter shows a sociopathic lack of remorse for any of this. jump off of that into "darker", and... American Gods by Neil Gaiman. I don't even have anything to add to that, just... American Gods. which again is more fantasy. but I can't even, because most horror books don't scare me. The Stand and IT both had one scene apiece that got me, that's it. The Stand is just plain a good book to me, and if you can write a book about the Christian Apocalypse and I'll get through it and call it a good book, you did something right. as King goes, the one he's done that got me good was Pet Sematary. House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski gave me the scares too, but I don't really put it on suggestion lists because This Insanity Isn't For Just Anyone. oh. hi, guys. I'm Corey. I didn't post in the intro thread because I am useless at those kinds of things; I agree with what Alan Watts once said: "trying to define yourself is like trying to bite your own teeth". yeah. I like stuff. hi.

Can't really go wrong with Gaiman. If you're into graphic novels then Sandman is a must.
House of Leaves gets under your skin and does not go away after you finish. It's great stuff.
For other horror writers, Clive Barker has some stuff. Though I find him more bloody fun than scary. His Books of Blood series is always good for a quick scary read.
20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill, great short story collection. His graphic novel series Locke and Key is also pretty great.

If you've got the grit to try reading a thousand page novel, Swan Song by Robert McCammon ruled. If you want a song that does cool suspenseful stuff and is about the concept of a book, try the Raw Shark Texts by Steven Hall. If you want something a little bleaker but simpler, I just finished reading Supervolcano: Eruption by Harry Turtledove, a what-if book about the volcano under Yellowstone going kablooey.
PS I personally liked Swan Song more than the Stand, which is the book everyone'd immediately compare Swan Song to. Stephen King sucks at doing endings.

Stephen King sucks at doing endings. Does he ever. As much as I love Under the Dome I absolutely hate the final act.

I don't read a ton of horror, but House of Leaves totally "worked" for me and I remember really digging Stoker's Dracula when I read it in college a couple years ago.

Stephen King sucks at doing endings. Does he ever. As much as I love Under the Dome I absolutely hate the final act. Makes me think of Neal Stephenson, famous for Snow Crash and Cryptonomicon and unfamous for The Diamond Age, Zodiac, The Baroque Cycle and Reamde. He absolutely blows at endings, but the runup to the end can be so fucking amazing...

I barely read anything, ever. But I understand H.P. Lovecraft. Just go into anything of his and you should be interested.
I will make note that I fucking LOVE the Interview with the Vampire film.

Horns by Joe Hill is pretty good. I REALLY like the book Let The Right One In. It's fantastic. H.P. Lovecraft = God. Preacher is a fantastic comic series. Sci-fi, I recommend Ender's Game, The Foundation Trilogy by Asimov is iconic. I, robot is great as well (the movie has almost nothing to do with the book. it's a shame, too.) If you like REALLY dry, British humor, then might I suggest the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. It's a 5 part trilogy. (You read that right, it's part of the humor.)
