A wooden stool sits in the middle of a dilapidated wrestling. The canvas is bowed and the ropes are saggy. The ring sits in the middle of what appears to be a large store room. The light is not quite bright enough to make the room glow, but instead casts an eerie presence. Outside the ring is workout equipment, such as a bench and a treadmill among other worn out workout equipment.
“Exodus Pro. Allow me introduce myself.”
The owner of the unseen voice appears and it is a young Caucasian male, he makes his way under the bottom rope with a roll, and he springs up and walks to the stool and sits. A smile radiates from his face, his blue eyes punch through the eerie gloom. He is wearing a pair of blue denim jeans and plain black t-shirt with the words “Wrestling Spirit” emblazoned on the front. The young male flashes his teeth with a cheeky grin, and what is quite alarming, especially when compared to the rest of his boyish features, is the fact he is missing is front right canine tooth. His blonde floppy locks fall over his forehead, but it does not cover his eyes. The ends of his hair curl around the edges of his ears.
“My name is Alex Brooks.”
He chuckles.
“And on December 14th, along with the rest of Exodus Pro I make my debut in Southern California. Up until now, I have spent virtually my entire career working under the bright neon lights of Las Vegas for various companies. And I’ve done a little bit of work south of the border in Mexico. A phone call and job offer have brought me to sunny beaches of San Diego – to Exodus Pro. And straight into the path of J-Swag and Silver Squid in this inaugural Winter Road tournament qualifying match. And honestly, to be selected as a candidate for something a big as this, is a huge honor for me. This is the first tournament for Exodus. And I have a chance to be part of it, if I hold up my end of the bargain and compete.”
Brooks pauses and swallows.
“Honestly, that’s what I do I compete. I don’t always win. I don’t always lose. But I do always compete. It’s part of what and who I am.”
“And that is a wrestler.”
“I don’t really know a lot about my opponents, in this match. Like I said, I’ve spent the majority, albeit brief, career in a different circle. This is the time for me to branch out, and what better way to do than on the ground floor of a new promotion. But, back to the point at hand, the fact that I don’t really know a lot about my opponents, but I do know a lot about myself. So, I’m going to J-Swag and Silver Squid, not my life story – but enough of a story. As I already told you, my name. So let me tell you a little bit more about myself…”
Alex Brooks trails off before taking a deep breath.
“I was born and raised in Aurora, Colorado. My due to the fact my father was in the Air Force and that’s where he was stationed when I was born. I’ve got a brother, Bobby and a sister, Alana. Both of them are younger than me. Though, I’m sure it’s not my family you want to know about. It’s me - of course. My home town, all of you would have heard about it recently. It was the unfortunate scene of what is known as the Dark Knight Massacre. That scarred my home town, and honestly, it almost lead to me hanging my wrestling boots and calling it quits because there are far greater things in this than bright lights and title belts. But, a friend of mine, Dina Bryce convinced me it was best to be hero they could look up to.”
“I guess that’s why I find myself here in Exodus Pro. Despite of my reasons for staying in the ring, I don’t consider myself any sort of hero. I just consider myself to be Alex Brooks."
Alex Brooks blinks.
“If I’m not boring you too much, I’ll continue… Like I said I’m not special, I’m not a superhero or anything of that ilk. I’m a wrestler and I will do the absolute best that I can inside that ring and outside if rules permit to win this Winter Road Qualifying match. Because that’s what I do, but do you want to know why else this qualifier is huge deal to me? Two reasons, one it’s my debut match, and I want the glory of being victorious on debut, it feels much better than ignominy of defeat in the memory banks. But, also because this Winter Road tournament is going to lead to something big; while not formally announced I’ll make the assumption that the Winter Road tournament will form the basis of crowning the first Champion of Exodus. And there is no better memory than that. It doesn’t matter if that first champion has a one week reign or a one year reign – they will always be the first to wear that belt around their waist or hang it from their shoulder depending on their fashion preference.”
“No tell me, why wouldn’t I want that?”
“Am I going to get there? I don’t know. There are way too many talented individuals, in these qualifiers alone. So imagine how tough it’s going to get when we get into the tournament proper. But I tell you what, all of that is going to drive me to overcome the Silver Squid and J-Swag.”
Alex Brooks nods.
“All of this talk about the tournament has seemed to drag me off track from what I was doing and that I was telling my opponents about myself. Where was I? So my career, well, realistically, my career only started because of a lucky break and some fans responding to me. I was selected to become of two wrestlers to take part in the Wrestling Spirit program MTV put together back in late two thousand and nine. That’s where I got this shirt and many others like it. That was fun. Myself and Jerry Eisenhower we did ok, it was tough for him, as I was a green rookie never been in the ring before and he was a veteran of years on the independent circuit. Our show was cancelled after one season, mainly because MTV decided wrestling wasn't the reality they wanted.”
“I tried to do other things when Wrestling Spirit finished. But I failed, miserably. Wrestling was in my blood, it occupied almost every waking moment and it certainly occupied my dreams. From meeting my childhood heroes to flying from the top of the cage. I wanted nothing more than to get back in that ring and get better at what I do. So I went back to Las Vegas and make a run of it. No, Jerry this time – though I still kept in contact with him, and he trained me some more. But this was all me. Even won a title, beating some big names along the way including someone you may have heard of, X-Calibur. Just after winning that belt, is when I lost this.”
Alex Brooks taps the gap in his mouth where his tooth should have been.
“Kenji Yamada took that tooth. I have a plate, but I don't really like wearing it – it makes me talk with a lisp. See, I was champ, and I felt on top of the world. But I was ripe for the picking. And a veteran of the game, turned my world inside out and my family against me. I ended up in a heap. No title. No job, because I lost a loser leaves town battle.”
“I was a bum.”
Alex Brooks frowns.
“You know, that my moment right there is the most relevant moment of my career. J-Swag and Silver Squid, that moment defines this match in many ways. I have a chance to takes the first steps onto the mountain that is Exodus Pro. And after an experience like that – I will not throw away another opportunity like the one that is in front of me.”
“Could either of you take it from me... Of course.”
“Well I roll over and play dead. No way. To take this from me, the pair of you will have to prize it from my cold limp fingers.”
Alex Brooks nods.
“That my pride, boys. No one takes anything from me without a fight. I don't believe in just giving up. I will fight to I have nothing to give up and even then I will look for something extra. What the pair of you need to remember when it comes time to step in that ring on Episode One is that while I may lose.”
“I will never be beaten.”
“Never. Ever.”
Alex Brooks stands up and walks over to the ring ropes and leans on them just enough to take some of his weight, but not so much that he topples over.
“J-Swag, Silver Squid. I've told you about myself and why I think I have what takes to beat the pair of you to move along the Winter Road. Now its your turn.”
He pushes forward and flips himself over the ropes and lands on his feet and the ground immediately next to the ring.
“Good luck.”
Black.
