He sat there quietly. Thoughtfully.
Defeat didn't bother him. He had found himself above all of it. Above wins and losses. What he did transcended such things. He had far more to do besides win or lose. He hedged his bets properly and it paid off. Kliff and Omar would make it to the semi-finals of the Winter Road, and one of them would finish a job he was sure he would finish anyways on the final E-Pro Television episode before March of War. Sitting in a dim room, he wasn't surprised when he heard the door open and Audrey Lloris came in.
"Iwakuma-san, it's time," she said.
Daisuke simply smirked.
"How soon is the flight?" he asked.
"Two hours. Just you and I on the flight," she replied.
"Come here," he told her. As to be expected, Audrey complied. Standing in front of Daisuke, she slowly dropped to her knees, something she almost seemed expected to do instead of asked. Regardless, she did it and Daisuke looked at her.
"What's the most painful thing you can think of?" he asked her.
"I'm not sure, Iwakuma-san," she said softly, looking up at him.
"Have you ever broken a bone?" he asked her, leaning forward slightly.
"No, sir. No, I have not," she replied quietly. With that, Daisuke reached to take her index and middle finger, leaving her paralyzed with fear.
"I would never hurt you, Ms. Lloris. For you are Legion, and you are part of me," he said to her, slowly bringing those fingers to her lips and kissing them gently. She looked up at him, and she smiled. Daisuke, her lord, would never do damage to her.
"Thank you, Iwakuma-san," she said in a whisper.
"I want you to do it," he told her, letting go of her fingers. "I want you to break them and describe the pain to me. You would do anything for me, and this is what I want," he told her. Leaning forward and kissing her forehead as if he was blessing her or assuring her there was nothing to worry about, he smirked and leaned back.
There was a crack.
Audrey screamed.
"It hurts so much," she whimpered out amongst tears.
"Good. You may explain the pain to Ms. Rourke when we visit her later."
He sat in the car. Audrey was there, fingers bandaged. No sign of Ichi, but an older African-American man sat in there with him. Daisuke remained on the phone as he listened.
"I will be back tomorrow to help you choose the items for the bar, Kliff. Don't worry what I'm doing. What I'm planning will only help your cause," he said. "By the time I return from this trip, we will have mentally won the war over the Pixie and her savior. You have my word," Daisuke said before hanging up the phone. Looking at the other man, he nodded. "I did it," he told him.
"Like I have many times before. You are slowly becoming the spitting image of me," he told Daisuke, grinning almost like a proud father. "I've never been happier. It's like you understand the message."
"The message is truth. The truth is light, Senpai," he told him. "What's different now than then?"
"It's simple, youngling. A good leader can convince his troops to take a bullet for him. You have indoctrinated young Ms. Lloris, and now she will do as you will. As rightfully she should," the man told him, and Audrey nodded, almost on the edge of the conversation but still part of it.
"I don't understand," Daisuke told him.
"Do you really need to? It's just one more weapon. A battle is won in the mind, not in the body. Right now, you have the psychological advantage over your little rival. What you intend on doing should crush whatever spirit she has left," the man said as the car came to a stop, now parked near the private jet's runway. "That's your stop. I expect to see you back in Ellum soon enough," he added.
"Your will be done," Daisuke said with a nod. The door opened and Audrey walked out. Never once did she glance at Daisuke like he did something to hurt her. On some psychological level, she believed she had to do what Daisuke said. She had felt compelled to provide that pain.
They exchanged another glance.
He was incredibly pleased with her, leading him to give her the first true smile he ever had.
"Your will be done, my lord," she said.
"In due time," he told her. "In due time."
He slowly walked the interior of the Central Library in Portland. He had no need to go great lengths to find this information out. This was one of the easier things he could dig up, especially considering her mother was a practical civil servant. In a black jacket, scarf, and jeans, his walk was slow as he saw her.
She looked just like her. Except, you know, older.
Approaching her, he reached into his jacket pocket and laid a long box wrapped in gold foil and a red bow on her desk.
"Excuse me?" the woman asked.
"From your daughter, Fiona. She and I are co-workers. I told her I was passing through, and she requested this. You are Julianne Rourke, yes?" he asked.
"Why yes, I am. But...Fiona said she'd be coming home soon," the woman replied.
"She will be. She'll be coming home to stay very soon, I promise you," he told her. Daisuke's voice was soft and gentle, reassuring. It was like he was trying to calm her and set a level of peace in her. It was working.
"But she's so happy in California," the woman said.
"And she'll come back here content and peaceful," he assured the woman. With that, he touched her hand and smiled. "You should call her soon. She misses talking to you," he told her, walking off while he placed his hands into the pocket of his jacket. It was a familiar theme, one his senpai whistled often.
"Tiiiime is on myyyyy siiiide," he sang as he left the building calmly. Quietly.
Like he didn't just leave her mother a live scorpion.
She screamed. That really must have hurt to be stung.
Daisuke smiled. Turning his head as he glanced to Audrey, he nodded.
"If you go in there, ask her how it felt."
Daisuke sat in the motel room, carefully wrapping another gift.
This one wasn't a scorpion. It was a slightly larger container. Still whistling, Audrey's small shadow casted over him as she stood behind him.
"He is coming," she told him.
"No," he said. "He is already here. And he wants to watch me finish what I started."
"It's at the point I have very little left to teach you," an elderly Native American man told him.
"Of course you have. I have taken the message and applied it. Your word is the truth and the truth is the light, senpai," he said to him looking at the old man in reverie. This was far more important than anything else. The two stood on the balcony of the motel both he and Audrey had been staying in, leaving him to lean against the rails as the man spoke to him.
"Daisuke, you are still an impetuous child, but so was he when he went into the world. People undid what I taught him. When I sent him to work for Johnny Drake, Michael Trey undid all the work I started in him. Even that egomaniacal Lance Sterling reinforced my training. Between Michael and that wretched woman I had disposed of, Jonathan fell out of my grasp. It's one of the reasons I made sure you had a hold on Ms. Lloris before she had a hold on you. What you don't understand is that a man may only serve one master. And this is why you serve me," the old man told Daisuke.
"Yes. Only you, senpai," Daisuke replied.
"If the sun will rise even one more time, so will you. And you will take your place as my right hand and my vessel. I'm getting older, Daisuke. I cannot do this forever, but I will live on through you," the man told him, reaching to touch his cheek. "You will carry the truth more than Jonathan ever did or ever could. Do not pervert the message," he said. "Because now you will be the messenger while I slip back into hiding for a while. I believe Jonathan has the point of my message to him," he chuckled.
"Believe me, senpai. By the time I finish with Fiona Rourke, the message will be exceptionally clear."
"We always hurt the ones we love. Whether purposeful or intentional, we harm them. We break them."
"I am curious about pain. It has been long since I've felt something that really hurt."
"With that being said, you want an explanation, Fiona. You want to know why I've come for you."
"I think you've been waiting for this."
"Fiona, deep down inside, you've waited for me to come to you. Since the moment you and I first locked eyes, we both knew it would come to this. Not a battle for in-ring supremecy, but the soul of the one you say you love most. Whether you want to admit it, this has long been about protecting your broken down senpai, the man that will extinguish the light of EXODUS Pro before it can truly blossom. Even now, as the towers and bridges burn, you defend the foolish old gaijin like he's the last hope of this industry."
"But he's not. He's a broken down, false idol. He's no more a prophet than I am a simple man."
"Fiona, it's not my place to say you have arrived at this point by sleeping with Jonathan Collins. Luck has taken its part, though some may say it's fate. We have been destined to get to this point, but...what's going to happen? This is the first time in your life Jonathan can't hold your hand through this. He can't tell you what's in my head because he is no longer privy to the thoughts and deeds of LEGION. We are many, little girl, and we will take away everything you've ever loved. So please, tell me how you plan on destroying me."
"I want to know so I can laugh at your impending end."
"Fiona, one thing that you have had is security. Whether you have failed or succeeded, you have had Jonathan Collins to be your training wheels. The safety of his hand over yours and your heart in his hand have been enough to carry you this far, but you are wandering into dangerous territory. Even if you do not see me at March of War, you may have to face both Omar Wise and Kliff Ulysses. What then, Fiona? What will you do when there is nothing there in your magical land of lights and sound? Fiona, you are alone in this world, the same way you entered it. The only thing you have to save you now are skills I hope you find deep down in. If you have surrounded yourself with failures, then that is what you have in your life. You casted your lot with a man that has absolutely nothing to offer."
"I am going to destroy you, Fiona."
"I am going to shatter everything that you thought you knew."
"And when you are left with nothing. When you are wondering what happened, I will look down with no mercy."
"Your loved one likes to talk about how he has miles to go before he sleeps...in two weeks, your journey comes to a crashing end."
"So please, Fiona, do me one last favor. When I twist and contort your body in my Parasite Eve, just tell me one thing."
"Tell me how it feels."
"Then tell that battered down gaijin you serve that hell is coming."
Defeat didn't bother him. He had found himself above all of it. Above wins and losses. What he did transcended such things. He had far more to do besides win or lose.
