chapter i
He was gagged.
He was bounced.
He was shackled.
He was chained.
For one reason or another there was always something there keeping him back and holding in place.
And there he stood in a orange jumpsuit with EXODUS PRO Wrestling DETENTION CENTER written in large black block style letters on the back…
...the Silver Tongued Devil…
...the Blackest Sun of Exodus…
His wrists bounded by a pair of stainless steel handcuffs, the word GRENDEL is etched upon the cold steel, as he holds his hands in front of him passively.
His ankles are wrapped by a pair of brown leather shackles with the word SHOZO printed in large black letters around each ankle. There is enough chain link between his orange slippered feet to allow him minimal movement between steps each with a small silver lock behind the ankle as the chain link continues up to his waist. With the chain wrapping around itself connecting to another set of locks, one on each side of his waist only to connect to the the handcuffs with yet another small silver lock. A large black plastic muzzle with the word REVOLUTION painted over the front, covers the lower portion of his face as he stood there in front of a tall sprawling double chain-link fence with razor wire spiraling over the top.
BUUUUUUUUUZZ!
A loud buzzer echoes through the empty yard of the prison as the large gate rumbles slightly and slowly begins to pull back on its set of tracks as it clangs home to a stop. With slow and measured steps, Aries shuffled out over the tracks and past the gate as he stands on a paved road. He looked to his left slowly and then to his right finding the road stretching out past eyeshot. He sighs loudly through the black plastic mask as he dropped his head slightly finding the restrictions of SHOZO, GRENDEL, and the rest of REVOLUTION constricting his movement...his voice...preventing Aries from being the one thing he wants to be…
...free.

Sitting on the top unmarked turnbuckle, Aries Reed rests his forearms on his large legs as he slowly circles his thumbs between one another behind his clasped hands, wrapped in white athletic tape. Aries stares into the camera with a smile on his face as he sits up slightly, pulling his eyes away from the camera throwing his arms out wide for all to see.
“This…”
“...this as you can see, this is a wrestling ring.”
“This where actual wrestling happens.”
“This where Chris Strike defends the Exodus Pro World Wrestling Championship. And like him or hate him, he defends the holy hell out of that thing to the chagrin of many of you.”
“Especially if your name is Fiona Collins, Jonathan Collins, Black Jones, Savannah Taylor, Beowulf, and Jimmy Riley. “
“This is where Justin Brooks went to war with Savannah Taylor for the International Title becoming only the second man to win the thing twice. It was here where showed what it meant actually be a champion and actually show up the Main Event only a few weeks ago. It's in a wrestling ring where Justin Brooks shows people why he's called the Big Bad Brooks.”
“And despite the fact that I can't stand the guy, hell, even SHOZO does his work with the Pacific Coast by knocking the guy out clean. We watched him and Shinji literally tear each other apart for the sake claiming the right of being a champion.”
“Which leaves...you...Ruby Tyler, the San Diego Bay Champion. What do you do in this ring again?”
“Even before you won the thing from the walking sea cucumber known as Kevin Hardaway, the question always became...in this ring, what do you do or better yet...who are you? What warranted you getting a shot at the San Diego Bay title before everyone else?”
“Hell, even Black Jones had the right to a rematch but yet instead...it's Ruby Tyler in sexual tension filled match against Kevin Hardaway.”
“Did we see this before?”
“I swear to God, we've seen this before.”
Aries snaps his fingers as the lightbulb comes on in his head.
“That's right Savannah Taylor and Chandler Scott!”
“That's what this is...a rehash of shit we've already had to choke down once before!”
“Let's understand one thing though, Ruby...you are no San Diego Bay Champion. You are nothing more but a placeholder, actually that's not correct because then I'd be shitting on placeholders everywhere.”
“The Black Jones.”
“The Fiona Collins...oh yeah, folks...placeholder, know your Exodus History before you start freaking out all over Twitter.”
Aries shrugs his shoulders gently after the mention of the self-proclaimed Ace of Exodus, granted he knew saying her name was like calling upon Bloody Mary but instead, you’d get the Voice of the Ace because, let’s be for real Fiona doesn’t have the time to deal with us ‘simpletons’.
“Tiffany Stearns.”
“Kira T. Zeppeli.”
“And even Kevin Hardaway.”
“No, you're no placeholder...you're nothing but a stain.”
“A stain on a title that people like Savannah Taylor and Jerry Matthews actually put in the effort to actually make the San Diego title something worth respecting. And since June, all of Exodus and myself have watched you shit all over it as you and Kevin Hardaway go back and forth…”
“...and back and forth…”
“...and back and forth…”
“..honestly, I wish that you and Kevin would just fuck already and get it over with it.”
He simply rolls his eyes and throws his hands into the air.
“Gawd.”

chapter ii
I could feel them circling around me.
Seeing the shadows of their massive wingspans at my feet as they fly around me...
...waiting for me to drop.
...waiting for me to fall.
...waiting for me to just keel over and die.
But there's something that they didn't quite understand.
...I'm Aries mother-fucking Reed and I refused to die.
"Been waitin' long, nigga?" A voice called out behind. If I didn't have the muzzle over my face, Cassius Reed could actually see me smile as my chains clanged lightly as I shuffled around to face him to see the middle child of the Reed clan leaning against the driver side fender of a 1996 Chevrolet Impala. He twirled a pair of keys around his pointer finger with a large smile on his face with his massive amount of black hair is pulled back into a large black puff. Inside of the driver seat, the heavy tinted window rolled down as the oldest of us all, Darius Reed turns with a smile in face and a flat billed New Era Atlanta Braves fitted cap over his bald head.
"Orange is not a good look on you, little brother."
I looked at both of them as I rolled my eyes, I struggled to pulled my hands out in front of me as a mumbled loudly against the plastic pressed against my face.
"Goddamn, A....you looking like shit version of Hannibal Lector, nigga. You lookin' all type of uncomfortable, how about we help you out?"
I let out an audible sigh of relief as Cassius continued to twirl a set of keys around his finger several times before catching them in his palm. Pushing himself off of the Impala he walked over towards me, grabbing the small bit of slack that the chain between handcuffs provided. He placed a slender silver key into the small keyhole of the hands cuffs and with a small turn of his wrist, I hear the locking mechanism inside give way and fall off my wrists. I touch my wrists with each hand, rubbing them to get some life back into them, glad to be freed of those things.
Reaching down, I grabbed the handcuffs, running a finger of the etching of GRENDEL's name as my brow lowers slightly. Since SHOZO decided to lose his mind on all of us for speaking our mind, I lost all contact with the man who I called my brother and more importantly my friend. I wanted to be angry at him for leaving, I wanted to be angry at him for not putting SHOZO in the dirt.
But I understood why he didn't.
He found Devan in the years that I knew him...he was happiest when she was around.
Yet I still missed him but I refused to shed a tear, to wait around for something that would never come back around.
He was gone and I was still here.
I let go of the handcuffs as they fell back to the Earth, hitting the dirt with padded thud. A felt the metallic click of the locks behind my ankles give way as Cassius reached down to remove them. I placed a recently freed hand on his shoulder as he looked up at me with an arched brow.
"What the hell, nigga?" Cassius glanced over at Darius, still sitting inside of 1996 Impala, who watched us both. He raised a large hand slowly in the air as we both looked at the eldest Reed.
"It's okay, Cass...he's gotta do this himself..he's gotta want this. We can't do it for him, we can only take him but so far."
Cassius only nodded his head as he stood from his kneeling position and dusted off his jeans. He stepped back towards the cherry red Impala, leaning against the fender and crossing his arms over his chest.
Bending down at the waist, I reached down to pull the leather straps from around my ankles as I held them in my hands. The branded name of SHOZO stared back at me. His name alone sent my blood into a boiling rage, I wanted to hurt him...not so much to kill him, that was GRENDEL's thing...no, no...I wanted to make him suffer.
Yet, he was the one who brought us all together.
...and he was the one who destroyed it all.
And now that I was no longer bogged down by him, by REVOLUTION, I was able to walk my own path, at my pace, at my own leisure. I had sacrificed my chance at becoming the Pacific Coast Championship but no more. I dropped the leather binds on top of the stainless steel handcuffs as I reached up behind my head feeling the lock keeping the plastic muzzle in place.
"Little A..."
I look up at Darius as the driver side door opens and the 6'6" frame stands tall and closest the gap between us as I look up at him. He adjusted his flat billed Atlanta Braves fitted cap as he smiled down at me. "We can do it all, A. Some of this shit...you're going to have to do this one on your own."
With a closed ham-sized fist, Darius opens his hand slowly as I look down at the small silver key that sits in the middle of his palm. "Cass and I can only do but so much...but if you want this, then it's going to be on you."

“So here we are...the first legitimate and rather creditable title defense of this sham of a San Diego Title reign that you’ve held since June 8th. And yes, I know that you’ve already had a defense against Kevin Hardaway but honestly…”
“...does that really count in your heart of hearts?”
“Because to the rest of us, you know the rest of that matters in this business, it doesn’t.”
“So this is what I’m going to do for you...because honestly, the San Diego Bay title deserves so much better.”
“I’m going to take it from you.”
“Yes, I’m going to take the San Diego Bay Championship from you...but I’m going to do it such a fashion, in such a manner, that everyone watching will wonder how in the hell did you even become San Diego Champion in the first place.”
“And sadly enough there isn’t going to be any light tubes...no chairs...none of that bullshit, we are going to have the one thing that you’re incapable of actually having…”
“...we’re going to have a goddamn wrestling match.”
“And we are going to find out who the better wrestler is...we’re going to find out who deserves the right to hold the San Diego Bay Championship for all of Exodus to see.”
“And you wanna know a secret?”
Aries beckons the camera close as it zooms in on his face as a large smile spreads over his cheek as he whispers softly into the camera.
“It ain’t you Ruby...it was never you and it’ll never be you.”
The camera zooms back out as Aries places his hands on his waist once again.
“You and Kevin Hardaway can go around and around all you want to but the minute that you actually have to step into the ring with a proper wrestler that isn’t a former beau...that you don’t have some weird relationship with, well, the wheels on that Ruby Tyler wagon is going to fall off...just look what happened when stepped into the ring with SHOZO and Savannah Taylor. This isn’t some chance for you to finally declare that you’ve arrived in Exodus, oh no Rubs...it’s the exact opposite. This is the chance for Aries Reed to finally get the opportunity to show what Exodus has been trying to silence since I arrived into its ranks with REVOLUTION.”
“When you first came in the Exodus, you were nothing more but a gimmick...nothing more but another nameless face amongst the crowd. And frankly, I didn’t give two shits about you and I still don’t...but the fact of the matter is that you hold the Exodus Pro San Diego Bay Championship.”
“...and I want it.”
“So don’t take it as this personal slight because if it wasn’t you...it’d be someone else.”
“If it was Kevin Hardaway, I’d crush him.”
“If it was Black Jones, I’d destroy him...again.”
“If it was Chandler Scott, I’d personally pack his bag and send him off to where the fuck he is holding himself up nowadays.”
“If you haven’t gotten the hint, Ruby, let me dumb it down for you.”
“You’re not special.”
“I’d beat you and several other people who look just like you just to put that San Diego Bay Championship around my waist. I don’t care if you had to beat Kevin within an inch of his life because, newsflash, everyone else would’ve done the same thing. It’s not like you got the Hardaway’s kryptonite between your legs and he would only fall to you.”
“So please, let’s go ahead and get the ideas of that you’re somebody on the Exodus Roster out of your head because when it comes right down to it...you ain’t got the juice to make it around these parts.”
“Oh yes, before you can sit there and bring up my shortcomings in the short time that I’ve been in Exodus, I ask you this…”
“...where the hell were you?”
“When I beating the shit out of Genji Yamato to get into the Honor Cup, where was Ruby Tyler?”
“When I stepping into the ring with the likes of Christum Furor...Christian Kane...Abby Park...where the FUCK was Ruby Tyler?”
“Oh yeah, still dicking around with the likes of mara...the Daughters of Janus.”
“Really making a difference for all of Exodus-Kind, weren’t cha’?”
“Ruby, you’re going to find out what means to step into the ring with the Blackest Sun of Exodus, you’re going to find it what it means to be beaten on every single level...dominance on every single facet of this business because, it’s what I do...it’s what I was bred for.”
“I’m not an adventurer.”
“I’m not a investigator.”
“I’m not a curiosity seeker.”
“I’m a goddamn wrestler...and I damn good one at that.”
“And soon enough, you’ll know it...as well as the rest of Exodus...and soon enough the entire San Diego Bay will have the champion it so rightfully deserves.”
“And his name is Aries Reed.”
my shawshank redemption
chapter iii
Regardless of the pain it would cause.
Regardless of the relationships that would splinter forever because of it.
Regardless of the enemies I would create.
It had to be like this...it needed to be like this. Holding the small key between my pointer finger and my thumb, I reached back to grab the lock, using the pad of my finger to find the keyhole before sliding the key in and turning my wrist, hearing the lock give way with a soft click. I could feel the pressure of the hard plastic muzzle against my skin ease slightly as I scrambled to pull the lock off, hearing it hit the soft desert Earth behind me. Both Cassius and Darius look both at one another, each with a smile on their face before looking back over at me with nod of approval.
I pulled the plastic muzzle off of my face slowly, holding it with both of my hands as I looked down at the REVOLUTION insignia emblazed on the front.
It was here that I made my first statement in Exodus.
It was here where I became one of the quickest men to become a Exodus Pro Champion...twice.
It was here where people understood who Aries Reed was and what I was capable of.
But those days were over now.
I opened my mouth slowly, moving my lower mandible around in a circular motion to stretch out the muscles after being kept dormant for so long. I looked up at my older brothers as my lips stretched out into a familiar wide and toothy smile, dropping the muzzle into the sandy dirt at my feet. I reached up and pulled apart the upper portion of the orange jumpsuit as buttons snapped off with ease. I pulled my arms from its sleeves, feeling the warm sun hit my dark skin for the first time in what seemed like forever. Letting out a deep sigh of relief, I threw my head back to soak in the sun and the moment.
I was free.
No more GRENDEL.
No more SHOZO.
No more REVOLUTION.
It was no just Aries...Cassius...and Darius. My real family, my real brothers the way Momma Reed would’ve always wanted. We go our separate ways only to come back together stronger and more united as ever.
“Yo, A...you missin’ something, lil’ nigga?” I open my head as lift my head back up to see Cassius standing in front of me holding out a pair of dark tinted sunglass with studded crosses over each lens. Taking the glasses from the middle Reed child, I slide the sunglasses over my eyes and nod my head slowly.
“So, boys...what do we do now?” Darius breaks the silence.
Cassius looked over his shoulder as he glanced back at Darius and shrugged his shoulders. “Shit, D...how ‘bout we ask baby brother since he’s fresh out ‘n he’s a free man now?”
Both of them look back at me as my smile hasn’t left my lips yet and I doubt it ever will.
“Simple...we do what Momma would expect from us…”
I placed a hand on Cassius shoulder as I looked over at Darius and started to chuckle gently.”
“...and we do whatever the fuck we want.”
