“There is no better than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance the next time.” – Malcom X
Defeat. It’s an ugly word, especially in this business. To come so close to victory only to fall short is a feeling that, quite frankly, sucks. You can have all of these grand ideas in your head of how you are going to win and how epic it is going to feel. But when things happen and everything blows up in your face? Few things can help ease or erase the bitter taste of disappointment. People can try to comfort you, offering words of encouragement, but sometimes you just want to shut yourself in your room and stew. After a while, you eventually start to feel like yourself and move onto the next person in line.
What I am about to say is going to be somewhat of a shock to pretty much everyone. Webster’s Dictionary defines the word humility as the quality or condition of being humble. Justin Brooks, let me take this time to show a glimmer of humility and say…..congratulations. Congratulations on doing what you said you were going to do. At Welcome Oblivion, you told everyone that would listen that you were going to make me regret pissing you off. You told everyone that you were going to join the two time champion club. You succeeded in joining that club, I will give you that. But if you think that I regret getting under your skin, then you are sadly mistaken. In fact, I’ll do you one better. I regret absolutely NOTHING that I said or did leading up to any of our three matches. Are you a better wrestler than I am? No. Are you a better fighter than I am? Maybe. Are you a better person than I am? No. So congratulations again, Justin, on becoming International champion again. Don’t think that this little rivalry we have going on is over just because YOU decided it. We WILL meet again and I WILL reclaim the International title. Keep it warm for me.
Under normal circumstances, people would be pissed at going from the clear winner for Match of the Year one week to basically opening the show the next. Contrary to what everyone might think, I’m glad to be in the opening match on Sunday. The opening match is probably the one match every show that SHOULD be on par with the main event in terms of importance. It is the opening match that sets the tone for the rest of the show. It is the opening match that should get people talking if it is done right. Lucky for everyone, I’m in the opening match. Unfortunately, so is Abby Park.
Abby, Abby, Abby. I see you finally decided to show your face around the RIMAC once more. If you are expecting some sort of excited or enthusiastic reaction to your “triumphant” return to EXODUS, please look elsewhere. I saw the Welcome Oblivion replay. I saw you manage to get past the crackpot security team and watch the show from a fan’s perspective. I find it funny that no matter how crazy things get, we can always rely on either you or Sally to show up every few months to offset the drama. It is almost like you share a psychic Korean connection or something. Regardless, the red carpet has been rolled out for your triumphant return. Hell, they even have selected an opponent they feel is worthy of your talents in the hopes of a quick and easy match. Then after you make quick work of me, there will be a big celebration in your honor. Quite frankly I’m insulted by this sentiment. I’m insulted because the very fact that EXODUS has decided to punish me somehow by having you face me makes me wonder just what the hell I have to do to get some semblance of respect around here. I can be in countless Match of the Year contenders and it won’t matter one iota. All people are going to see are the times where I came up just short. All people are going to pay attention when it comes to me is the fact that I apparently can’t get the job done. That sentiment irritates me to NO end. That sentiment insults me.
It also motivates me.
It motivates me to become more than what people perceive me to be. It motivates me to do any and everything it takes to win around here. I could care less what the front office thinks. What I did against Justin Brooks was prove to myself that I more than belong around here and that I belong in the ring against the best of the best. That now includes you Abby. I do have a question for you though, Abby. What brought you back? What could you possibly have to prove to anyone anymore? You’ve already reached the heights of your career that people can only dream of. You were part of last year’s Feud of the Year. You are a former World champion. You are loved by the fans and fellow wrestlers alike. Indeed, it must be fantastic to be you. Too bad you don’t live in the real world and you managed to have everyone fooled, Abby. You show up suddenly after a near seven month absence and everyone is too blinded by the fact that one of their favorite daughters has returned to notice the truth.
You ran away.
You ran out on EXODUS when you lost to Chris Strike. You took your ball and went back to Seoul, letting everyone who ever invested ANYTHING in you, everyone who ever believed in you and had faith in you down in the process. Are you proud of yourself Abby? Are you proud of taking the coward’s way out of things and hightailing it out of San Diego when times got too tough for you? I’m not a religious person by any means, but I know enough. The Book of Proverbs, chapter sixteen verse eight says pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. Your pride got in the way of you continuing on the path of success here in EXODUS. You took one loss against Chris Strike and suddenly you said “Nope!” an left. What kind of role model are you supposed to be for the impressionable young EXODUS fans if you just pack it in anytime someone better than you messes up your plans? What kind of message does that send to people? It sends them the message that it is OK to quit. Who cares if times get tough? You can quit and come back and all will be forgiven. And here I thought you were a woman of honor and integrity. I was expecting far better from a former World champion. This just makes me realize that maybe, JUST MAYBE, your old friend Johnny Cannon is a far better human being than you are Abby. Never thought you’d hear me say that did you? But what irritates me the most about this whole thing Abby is that while you were in a self-imposed, possibly Kimchi-fueled exile back in Seoul, basking in your own hype and wallowing in self-pity, people like me, Aries Reed and even Justin Brooks were putting in the work to make sure that this place kept on going. Sure the fans don’t really care about two thirds of the people I mentioned, but the fact remains that we kept doing our jobs while the likes of you, Sally Talfourd and even Christum Furor were away doing God only knows what and God only knows who. The wheels kept on turning and people soon began to forget all about you three. Yet each time you come back, it’s like a visit from the Royal Family. Let me throw one more quote of biblical proportions at you, Abby. The Gospel of Luke, chapter eleven verse thirty two. “But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” One of the lost, favored daughters of EXODUS has returned and a match fit for a fiesta has been laid out for you. The only thing you haven’t factored in, the one thing NO ONE believes will happen, is me playing spoiler. Get used to it, gongju.
I have finally figured something out about you, Abby. See, you may not realize this or you may not be willing to admit this, but there are more similarities between you and Sally than you may think. Hear me out here, will you? You see, it wasn’t too long ago that Sally was the favorite daughter not named Fiona among these parts. She had the success, the love of the fans and the respect of the office that you do today. But somewhere along the way, she began to outlive her usefulness. So instead of completely riding off into the sunset, she simply regenerated. Do you want to know what the result of her regeneration was? You guessed it. It was you! Don’t you see Abby? You and Sally are Time Lords from Seoullifrey, and you happen to be the Second Doctor. You see, there is a cycle of regeneration among the Time Lords, so eventually your time will come to regenerate. My question is, who is going to come along next to complete the flow you have going on? But there is a funny thing about regeneration among the Time Lords. If a Time Lord is killed before they regenerate, then that’s it. Show is over and time to go home. No more Time Lord. Your regeneration period is drawing close. Sunday night, I put a permanent halt on any future plans you may have had when you decided to come back, Second Doctor.
See, I had a feeling paying attention to Section B wasn’t a COMPLETE waste of my time. They are informative, when they want to be.
In all seriousness Abby, I know you have a lot of preconceived notions about me. Join the club. You probably think that we are similar in how we are going about things. We are NOTHING alike. I have my faults, I know. But at least the only time I wasn’t around EXODUS was when I out injured. Other than that, I have stayed loyal to this company, even though said company has given me no real valid reason to stay. You’ve seen how they treat people. You’ve seen the caste system in place. It is a clear case of the haves and have nots. We are clearly in the latter group. In cases like this, we have no choice but to pick ourselves up and fight. We fight with everything we have left inside of us. We fight for the chance at greater glory. I know that with you riding back into town on your brilliant white horse that your name is now in the mix when it comes to the World title. I’m not as stupid as people think. But what I am is hungry, determined, cunning…….and pissed off. I’ve seen people like you come and go from this company, Abby. Now that I have a chance against the real thing? Words can’t begin to describe how much I am looking forward to this. I don’t care how many former EXODUS World champions I have to go through to make people pull their heads out of their own asses and FORCE them to realize that hey, there ARE other wrestlers in this company outside of the top tier of the caste system. Even though this seems to be your calling card as of late, Abby, I am simply asking you to not disappoint me. I want to put on the match that will leave everyone talking. I want to put on the kind of match that will have everyone forgetting there were other matches on the card.
Don’t let me or EXODUS down, Abby……again.
Auf Wiedersehen
