Waiting for an airplane was a lot like listening to Donovan Torment. Annoying, uncomfortable, and you felt a little violated during the process. Fiona hated waiting around for a flight, especially when that flight was to Portland, Oregon. How many times had she told herself she would never go back there? Granted, her family was there but after pursuing her dream of becoming a professional wrestler and moving to California, Fiona had begged her mother and father to move out there with her but of course, they had refused. Oregon was their home, plain and simple.
Curled up in one of the chairs near her boarding gate, Fiona was wrapped up in her favorite Kingdom Hearts snuggie; headphones were on her ears, drowning out the world; a sour expression covered her face as well. She didn’t want to go back to Portland and leave behind Jonathan and Madison, especially not when she knew she should be getting ready for the biggest fight of her life against that scumbag, Daisuke Iwakuma.
Reaching down into her carry on, Fiona pulled out the small stuffed Domo doll she had been given from Madison. “So you don’t get too lonely without me and Daddy,” she had said, giving Fiona one final hug. Fiona smiled down at the stuffed doll, hugging it tightly against her chest then. It was then that she realized that no longer was she just simply fighting for herself and her namesake; it was now all down to her to protect the two people she had come to love and cherish in her world. Jon and Madison had gotten into her heart and not let go and Fiona knew that this fight would be just as much for them as it would be for her; they were the first real things she had wanted to hold onto in her life, besides professional wrestling. Pro wrestling had given her a new life, a new purpose. She had found someone she loved deeply and he and his daughter had accepted her without question. If this was his battle, she'd take up arms with him, especially in a match that could show the world what she was really made of.
“You know, if you keep thinking so hard like that, you’re gonna set your brain on fire,” a voice coming from directly beside her caused her to jump in her seat, even though she had headphones on but no music yet. Turning her head, she rolled her eyes and laughed as she saw her best friend, Mandy Summers, grin at her and hand her a cup from a Dunkin Donuts. “What’s got you thinking so deep anyways?” Mandy asked, stretching out in the seat beside Fiona.
“Everything. Mom and Dad, Jon and Madi, how the hell I’m going to get through this and win this fight against Iwakuma. It’s just….it’s a lot, Mandy,” Fiona revealed as she looked over at her best friend and tag team partner. It felt good to have her support and not be alone as she went back to Portland; they were best friends and partners in crime, always having each other’s backs no matter what.
Mandy sighed, her head shaking from side to side before she took a quick sip from her coffee. “Fi, you need to relax, okay? You always get so worked up inside of your own head and think the worst things will happen. Everything is going to be fine, you worry way too much. Trust me though, okay? You’re strong and you’re gonna get through this and come out on top, just like you always do. You’ll see.”
Fiona knew she was right.
-------------------------------------------
Some hours later, the duo had arrived in Portland and was chauffeured to the hospital by Fiona’s father, Anthony, where her mother was staying. She still couldn’t get over the fact that her mother had been stung by a scorpion but thankfully, they had called 911 for her at the library immediately and she had gotten medical attention before something horrible could have happened. Sitting in an uncomfortable plastic chair beside the hospital bed, Fiona’s hand reached for her mother’s as she held it gently in her own.
“I’m so proud of you, Fiona. You’ve grown into such a strong woman and I can see a little spark inside of you, growing more and more,” Julianne smiled softly down at her daughter while stroking her thumb across her daughter’s knuckles. While she had been poisoned by the scorpion, the medicines and care the hospital had given her did the trick and she would be normal again soon but she still had to be in the hospital until then. “But, whatever is troubling you will work itself out. Everything will be okay.”
“I do have a spark, Mom. Actually I wanted to tell you…..I’m in love.”
Julianne’s eyes widened as a surprised gasp escaped her mouth; hearing that her only daughter had found someone she could fall in love with was definitely a shock. “Well, tell me about this man. What’s he like?”
Fiona smiled. Her mother, always the curious one who had to ask questions. It was the librarian in her. “He’s a wrestler, like me. He’s actually second in command for EXODUS Pro but, he used to be an English teacher too actually. He’s very well-read, he’s educated, he’s a little older than me but you’d never tell. And, he has a daughter.”
“A daughter? Fiona….” The hesitation in her mother’s voice caused Fiona to place her other hand up, head shaking.
“Mom, no. I know what you’re thinking but his daughter, Madison, has become a huge part of my life too. She looks up to me so much and says I’m her hero. She’s like, a little me and I wouldn’t ever want to do anything to hurt or break that little girl’s heart.”
"It's a big responsibility to be a role model, sweetheart," her mother said with a faint smile.
“I can handle it, Mom. You know I can but you don’t know how much he means to me. He and his daughter both are my world now, along with wrestling.”
Julianne could tell that Fiona’s mind was made up. One thing about her, when she put her mind to something she stuck right to it. “Then you know what? If you love him and his daughter that much? You need to fight hard for it. You need to fight to the ends of the earth for them both if you truly love and care for them as deeply as you say you do.”
Fiona nodded her head, eyes so much like her mother’s boring into hers. She knew she was right and it was exactly the thing that she needed to hear, especially coming from her own mother. “I love you, Mommy,” she whispered, her body leaning over to hug the woman tightly. Julianne did the same while stroking her daughter’s back and hair, her eyes closed tightly as a few tears slid down the curve of her cheek.
“And I love you. Now, I’m going to get some rest but I’ll see you before you go back.”
Fiona smiled, stroking her mother’s cheek before she pressed a kiss to her forehead and walked out of the hospital room with a new determination set in her mind.
Fight for the ones you love the most.
--------------------------------------------------------
"So, since I told Mom, I guess I should tell you too," Fiona said as she sat in the living room with her father, Anthony. The two of them, plus Mandy, had gone out to eat after leaving the hospital and then returned to the home where Fiona had grown up that her parents still lived in. Mandy had gone off to relax and sleep while Fiona sat with her father in front of the TV, old wrestling tapes playing. With a look over at her father, she bit her lip. "I'm seeing someone and it's really serious. I'm in love."
Anthony Rourke had always believed in Fiona's dreams. From the time she was convinced she'd become an astronaut until the day she left home to travel the world as a luchadora, Anthony always said he believed in her. Patting her knee, he smiled as he glanced at her. "Love's funny, you know. It's the most powerful currency in the world. We create art for it. We've gone to war over it. We are a strange breed for it. Does it scare you?" he asked her with a gentle smile.
Fiona was very much her father's child. While she might look like her mother and have a love of books like her mother, her personality and thoughts ran much the same as her father's did. "Kind of but at the same time, it doesn't." Her head turned to look over at him. "I mean, I know its love. Even though he's a very tough man and doesn't say it often but, when he does say it? It just means so much more to me, you know?"
"I think that those words are often our most powerful. We have to be careful how we use them and who we use them with," he told her as he took a deep breath and glanced at her. "I think you're afraid of something, and I can see it. I know you're trying, and it's not easy. I can't promise you it's going to get better, but I think that you need to not fear. There are worse things than the devils we don't know. If you're afraid of a war, just know that if you're going in for the purpose of love, you'll never walk alone.”
Fiona stared at her father in amazement, listening carefully to every word that he spoke and uttered so poetically. He had always been one of her biggest supporters and whenever she had a problem, she knew talking to him would make everything better. "I am afraid of something, Daddy. This next fight is a big one for me; probably the biggest I've ever had to face. Part of me a little unsure of if I'll even make it out alive because my opponent knows me. He knows me because I saved Jon from him and he didn't like that," she sighed, running a hand through her hair before she looked back at him. "I need to win though, not just for me anymore. I need to win this for him and for his daughter. I need to win for us, especially after what happened to Mom."
He glanced at her once more and took a deep breath as he watched her carefully. "I think what you should worry about is not making it out alive, but if you have the courage of your convictions. I've watched, don't think I don't. You go out there every week and it's like you're trying to sell the world that you're not afraid. Don't do that, convince yourself first and the world will fall in line with you. Trust me, I promise," he told her with a smile. "And if you go out there without fear and with no worries in your heart, you will fly. You will finally be that Pixie he sees. Trust me."
Fiona smiled softly as her father spoke and soon, her arms wrapped around him tightly, snuggling into his side. While she hated Portland, the only things that made it worthwhile were her father and mother. Resting her head on his shoulder, Fiona looked up at him. "You're like my own personal Yoda, did you know that?"
"Ohh, well do. Or do not. There is no try," he told her with a laugh and the gravelly scratch in his voice of the fictional character she had just referenced. It was his best attempt at the impersonation, one that had never been perfect through the years. "I know we can make a lot of jokes, but I believe in you, princess. And whoever this guy is has made the war that much scarier. So take down the monster. Slay giants like you were born to do. Be a champion."
Her father always gave her the best pep talks and always seemed to know exactly what it was she needed to hear. Smiling softly, she nodded her head and took a deep breath. "I will. I'm going to do this and I'm going to win. I'm going to win for him and our love; for you and mom; for Jimmy; everyone who believed in me. I'm going to win this and I'm not going to go down without a fight," she said softly, her voice full of confidence however as she glanced over at her father again. "Just call me Frodo because I am going to Mordor and winning."
"Well, as they say, one does not simply walk into Mordor..." he went on with a laugh, glancing at her and giving her a grin. It was all in good fun for her, and she knew it. Considering all the things that were on her mind, it probably didn't hurt for her father to be on her side and giving her a few things to ease her mind. "Do me a favor though, okay? Don't come back to Portland. I'm not saying that because I don't want you to visit, because your mother would freak out. You don't want to finish your life where it started. You'll miss out on the rest of the world."
“Dad….” Fiona sighed, her voice trailing off. He knew how much she had hated it in Portland, especially nearing her time to finally have a chance to break out of its web of repetitiveness. But to hear him tell her not to come back because he knew how much and didn’t want it to stunt her growth made her eyes well up and lower lip tremble slightly. Without saying a word, she hugged him even tighter as she buried her face into his neck and let the tears fall. “I love you, Daddy,” she whispered.
He said nothing at first, merely holding her in his arms. His daughter meant the world to him, and he wasn't going to let her fears bring her home to be miserable. His beard rustled against her shoulder before he let her go. "Now you get on back to California, and you do what you were meant to do. There isn't much left for you here anyways. Sooner or later, I'll convince your mother to get out of here too, I've always wanted to live in the Bay Area," he chuckled. "But you? You outgrew Portland...they weren't ready for you anyways."
Fiona hugged her father tighter, a few more tears spilling out from her eyes to slide down her cheeks. Anthony Rourke was like a hero to her and always would be, no matter what happened. He never failed to make her smile or laugh or even feel more empowered as he had done with his pep talk. “I love you, Daddy. I’m going to win this war and I’m going to fight until my last dying breath for everyone I love. I promise.”
------------------------------------------
The camera zooms in on Fiona as she stands in her old bedroom in Portland, eyes staring intensely into the camera lens as the International Title is slung over one shoulder.
“I’m just going to cut right to the chase because while everyone knows me as the Strong Style Pixie or the Honey Badger? I’m not that today. In fact, going into this match I’m not going to have any of my other personas. Oh no, not this time. Do you want to know why? Because I realized just how personal this war has become. In fact, it’s gotten too personal, if you ask me. So no, there will be no Honey Badger at the RIMAC on the 27th. You’re getting 100% all natural, grade A prime Fiona Rourke.”
“I have to say something about you, Daisuke. You have been pretty damn successful so far with this war you’ve got going on between us. I should applaud you,” she stops and began to slow clap as she stares into the camera before speaking once again.
“You have managed to do something not even Donovan Torment and Omar have been able to do, and that’s to get under my skin. So, congratulations.”
“Do you enjoy your sick little mind games? You must apparently, seeing the lengths you’ll go to get under my skin and into my head. So let me stop and tell everyone just the kind of sick things this asshole has done to not just me but to MY OWN MOTHER. He brought a scorpion into her workplace, leaving it as a gift for her as if it was from me and it stung her. That’s right; a scorpion stung my mother all because of Daisuke Iwakuma and his insane, twisted mind games that he relishes in playing. She had to be in the hospital for days to get treated and she could have DIED BECAUSE OF HIM but thankfully, her co-workers were quick to get help. But I let it get to this point. I let this all happen.”
She takes a deep breath of air, her head shaking as she still is in a state of disbelief. She is seen visibly closing her eyes and counting to herself before she inhales again and exhales, eyes opening to look at the camera.
“That is of course, until January 27th.”
“On January 27th, there’s nothing stopping me from laying into you, Daisuke. I will make you hurt. I will make you bleed. I will make you wish that you had never thought about stepping into that ring with me or igniting this war that has been going on between us for some time now. The biggest thing though? There is nothing stopping me from giving “The Perfect Evil” what I like to call “the perfect beating.”
She smirks, hoisting the belt higher over her shoulder and patting it slowly.
“You know, I listened to Abby Park’s last promo and it really got me thinking. She mentioned first times and it got me looking back. The first time that I ever tasted gold was with the man that Daisuke attempted to hurt numerous times. The first time that I ever laid eyes on the man that I love with everything inside of me was because Daisuke was trying to harm him and now, the first time that people will ever see what my rage brings will be because of Daisuke. Is anyone sensing a pattern here yet? Daisuke is responsible for many of my firsts but let me tell you something; me? I’m going to be his last. Because I’m going to be the last person you ever step into a ring with. With this match being no disqualification? I'm out for blood, Daisuke. And there ain't a thing you can do to stop me.”
“So now in just a few short days, I’m going to do exactly what I should have done the first time that I ever laid eyes on you, Daisuke. I’m going to end this war, once and for all. Yeah, I might get hurt. Hell, I may even bleed and there’s a very big chance that someone in this match isn’t leaving the RIMAC on their own two feet, but I need those scars. Do you know why? I’ll tell you. I’m going to wear those scars going into March of War as badges of honor and I’m going to wear them proudly. I’m going to show the world that I have and always will bring the Mayhem in Project Mayhem; that I solemnly swear I am up to no good, but most importantly? I’m going to show the world that I’m the best wrestler in EXODUS Pro. You can count on that, Iwakuma-me.”
“Deuces, Bitch.”
Fade.

Fade.
