When four women in their early to mid-20's get together to buy a home, they can at least afford a nice one. When all four work jobs that are hardly classified as jobs, you get the little house that belongs to EXODUS Pro Champion Fiona Rourke, her cousin Maggie, along with her roommates Spencer and Piper.
On the plus side, they were all happy.
Okay, not entirely true. Three out of four wasn't bad, and it could have been three out of five, considering Fiona had allowed the daughter of her boyfriend, the currently comatose Jonathan Collins, Madison to live with them for a while.
It's why Fiona sat there, picking at her own food more often than Madison Collins was, who sipped at her juice as she glanced at her friend.
"Wanna see a magic trick?" Madison asked.
"Sure," Fiona said, still looking somber. Though she was around friends, admittedly the place was a little less happy without someone she loved. She glanced at Madison as she reached into her pocket and pulled out a dollar bill, giving Fiona the universal sign to watch her. With ease, Madison folded up the dollar, and without literally turning it upside down managed to turn the bill upside down without a problem.
"Tada!" Madison said with a smile.
"That's awesome, Munchkin!" Fiona said, doing her best to put on a strong and happy face in the time of darkness. Madison needed someone to keep a strong feel, a stiff upper lip. That alone was why she kept strong.
"Daddy says sometimes that all you need to do when you wanna help is just shed some light," Madison told her, grinning. It made sense, honestly. Jon was the kind of person that brought a lot of light into the world for those people he knew. He had fought hard for his best friend, to give him hope that he could have a job and prove someone wrong. He told youngsters he believed in them and their chances in this industry. Jonathan Collins was someone who told her that not only was she a woman who could be loved, but someone that could be a champion.
It was everything she needed.
She washed dishes a few minutes later, and it seemed like everyone was just going back and forth, in and out, things were just plain and routine. Everything they did held a cloud over the day, and it didn’t seem to be going away. Battle scars said it all, really. Fiona still felt a little tender almost two weeks after her big match against Magnus Gunner. Everything about this felt like an open wound. Things that remotely felt wrong sent Fiona snapping into anger. Invincible was a raw nerve for her, and it felt like it was never going to heal.
"Man, Jon would be here baking if he saw all this," Spencer mused as the girls all sat around, Madison watching television quietly.
"WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT JON?" Fiona shouted. "Did you see how hard it was to get out of bed for him sometimes with that knee? Have you had to watch him stress over if he was doing the right thing? You don't know a thing about the man I love," Fiona said defensively, looking at her friend angrily for the first time in the almost eight years she had known her friend.
There was dead silence. Then a whimper.
There were tears, there needed to be. So many nights had spent with a stiff upper lip, making him proud. So many nights had to be strong for everyone, but all she could do was weep because Jon was somewhere she couldn't reach him, no contact to assure her it was going to be fine.
She had to be fine, though. She needed to be fine again, especially knowing that this would be the most difficult time of her career. Knowing that Jonathan had put her and Jimmy into a tag team tournament, she didn't want to let him down. Not after all this.
"I'm sorry," Fiona whispered shakily to Spencer. "I'm just so tired of this. It's like every time him and I find some happiness together, someone's gotta try to take it from us. LEGION, Kliff...Angelo..." Fiona sighed heavily, fingers running through her hair and tugging at the strands in frustration.
"It's okay, bud," Spencer said, crying herself as she tried to comfort and ease the pain of her best friend. It was what it was, and she knew that it was going to get worse before it got better.
But better could come sooner than either Fiona or Spencer expected.
On the plus side, they were all happy.
